Tencent Donates RMB5 Million to Zhouqu Disaster-Hit Area
On August 9 2010 the Tencent Charity Foundation started its emergency charity response mechanism the first time and announced the donation of RMB5 million to Zhouqu where a super landslide took place. In the morning of August 8 heavy rain triggered a landslide in Zhouqu County Gannan Prefecture Gansu Province. Preliminary statistics show that the sudden disaster caused 127 deaths and 1294 people missing. Currently as mud cleaning and rescue work are fast underway in Zhouqu food and water supply and quarantine work are also in progress.
In accordance with the relevant provisions of China’s National Flood Control and Drought Relief Contingency Plan the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters started Grade II flood control emergency response at 14:00 August 8 and the Gansu Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters also launched Grade I flood control emergency response at the same time to cope with the landslide disaster in Zhouqu. It is understood that the special RMB5 million donation marked the fourth time for the Tencent Charity Foundation to start its emergency response mechanism this year following the Haiti Earthquake the drought in Southwest China and the Yushu earthquake in Qinghai Province.
Charles Chen Executive Director-General of the Tencent Charity Foundation said that the extraordinary landslide in Zhouqu had caused heavy damage. By launching its emergency response mechanism the Tencent Charity Foundation has joined hands with Zhouqu people in relief work to help them to rebuild their homeland as early as possible.
